The persistent sound of a phone ringing dragged Frank Fitzgerald from his slumber. With a few polite words he reached for it and was about to hit the answer button when his wife said, “Tell whoever it is to fuck off.”

“I wish it was that simple, my dear,” he replied. “Yes?”

It was Danny Travis. “Sir, we have a situation.”

“I’m awake.”

“Someone hit the Ismat safehouse tonight. They took out all of our agents and killed the Ismats as well.”

“Bloody hell.”

“I’m there at the moment.”

“I’ll be right over.”

“Yes, sir.”

The call ended and Fitzgerald swung his legs over the edge of the bed. Behind him his wife asked, “Can I expect you home anytime soon?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Do be careful.”

“Aren’t I always?”

It took him thirty minutes to get dressed and drive through the rain-soaked London streets to the safehouse. He parked outside the police tape and walked the rest of the way after showing the officer on watch his identification.

Danny Travis, wet and cold, was waiting for him. “Sorry to get you out on a shit night like this, sir.”

“Can’t be helped, Danny. Walk me through it.”

The MI5 agent led his boss over to the BMW. “Baker and Chapman were killed in the car, sir. Both shot through the head. The blood spatter points to that.”

He led Fitzgerald around the other side. Lying beside the vehicle was another body. “Lance Grover, sir. Shot in the head from behind. Executed.”

“Shit.”

“Whoever did this were professionals, sir.”

“It would seem so, Danny.”

“If you follow me, sir, I’ll take you inside.”

“Lead the way.”

Inside the safehouse, they found Ross lying in the hallway. Travis said, “It looks like he heard them coming in, sir, and went to meet them. They shot him here. Jaalib Ismat is in the kitchen.”

Ismat had been shot after standing up. His chair was turned over and the remains of his coffee spilled across the table onto the floor.

“His wife is upstairs in the bedroom, sir. They shot her while she was still in bed.”

Fitzgerald nodded. “Has anyone notified the daughter yet?”

“No, sir.”

“Have Lacey do it.”

“Yes, sir.”

A woman appeared, wet, her hair flattened by the rain. “Have Lacey do what? Oh, hello, sir. Bitch of a night to be out.”

“Indeed, Miss Fox, indeed.”

“What did you learn, Lace?” Travis asked.

“Apart from the fact it was a professional job? Not much. There is no brass and we can only assume that they parked their car further along the street.”

Fitzgerald nodded. “Have the police door knock an extra block in every direction.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Do we have anything else?”

“Not at the moment.”

“All right, this is what we’re going to do. I want you to pull whoever you need out of bed and get them on this. I want security footage found and gone through from here to the Thames. Someone will have something, and I want it found.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And, Travis, find out where Simon Venables was tonight.”

“Sir?”

“You heard me, get it done.”

“Yes, sir.”

Fitzgerald walked into another room and took out his cell. He dialed Anja Meyer and waited. “Hello?”

“Miss Meyer, Frank Fitzgerald.
